You might think making quality wine is about growing good grapes but often the answer lies beneath our feet.
With the challenges of climate change it's more important than ever to understand our natural resources and how to protect them now and into the future.
The vineyard team recently launched a deep soil analysis project to better understand our soils and guide the choices we make tomorrow - for planting, grape varieties, aspect, pruning, rootstocks, density and more.
We have fields planted to cereal and cover crops as part of our biodiversity projects and this is where we dug about 30 soil pits. We are determined to protect our land and support a resilient viticulture into the future, to reveal the secrets of our terroir through the wines of tomorrow. So far, we've recorded mottled clays, red Keuper clays (Triassic), gypsum, limestone, magnesia, sandy marls, dolomite crystals… so many elements that tell the story of the identity of our terroirs.
A wine is a composition of its parts - the soil, the grapes, the climate, the people - we want to protect and preserve for the future so that we can continue to share the story of this place.
