May brought a dome of heat

Western Europe experienced an exceptionally early and intense heatwave in late May, bringing unusually high summer temperatures to the Languedoc region. Towns across southern France saw thermometers soar well into the 30s Celsius, breaking long-standing May records as a "heat dome" settled over the continent. This was a worrying time in the vineyards, presenting risks for both Cazal Viel (lower elevation) and our Chateau Auzines estate, at 350m in the Corbieres. At Cazal Viel, the vines are already flowering and too much heat at this point can affect pollination of the flowers and reduce the number of berries produced, reducing in lower yields. At Auzines, the young shoots are susceptible to sunburn, as the canopy isn't sufficiently developed. Luckily, the heatwave only lasted a few days so damage was minimal, especially with older vines which have deeper roots.


It does however reinforce that the climate is changing and weather patterns are no longer dependable as in previous decades. A sustainable approach to wine production is no longer optional but critical. Regenerative practices help to manage temperature spikes thanks to the cooling effect of cover crops between rows and have the added benefit of both sequestering and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In the Corbieres in particular, water shortages are common and we are very fortunate to have access to water thanks to our rainwater lake, which took 5 years to create. Many years ago at Cazal Viel, Henri - Laurent's father - widened a natural pond on lower ground that naturally filled with water during the winter months and it has sustained our vines for many decades. The pond is also a haven for local wildlife and biodiversity. Access to water is instrumental to crafting elegant and fresh white wines, and we are renowned for our signature Viognier, as well as Albarino and Chardonnay.


This summer, if you are on holidays in the south of France or Spain and you experience a wet day here or there, be thankful on behalf of local vignerons. Any small bit of rainfall during the growing and ripening season could be the difference needed to produce a healthy crop in 2026. On the upside, the hot summer months call for refreshing rosé and it's a style we love. Our style of rosé is pale, dry and elegant with ripe, summer fruit flavours and a crisp, dry finish. We believe rosé to be a wonderful partner to many dishes, but it works especially well in summer, pairing well with fish, salads and charcuterie in particular.
