Bardou, Saint-Chinian

Laurent produces his Syrah based single vineyard Saint Chinian from a selected block named Bardou on his reputed family-owned estate. The site has very poor ,stony soils and the vines are about 26 years old (see photo). This unique terroir coupled with a windy, dry microclimate means that yields are low (approximately 30 HL/Ha) and the fruit is intensely flavoured and concentrated. Aged in French oak barrels (both new and 2nd use).

Tasting notes:

Intense deep red colour. It has an elegant, slightly restrained nose of blackberries and plums with some mocha oak character. On the palate the influence of the calcerous clay terroir gives the wine minerality and depth with multiple layers of fruit and surprising lift and freshness for a wine of this intensity. An elegant yet powerful red that can be drunk now or cellared successfully for up to 8 years.

Anthony Rose, The Independent

Laurent Miquel's richly spicy southern French red is Languedoc's answer to Barossa Valley shiraz, with opulent blackberry fruit yet just enough balancing freshness.
