The estate at Cazal Viel in the St Chinian appellation has been in the Miquel family for eight generations, since it was acquired in 1791. Laurent Miquel, the latest in this long line of winemakers, brought in a further estate at Les Auzines in Corbières in 2009.
A savoir-faire handed down from generation to generation in combination with a bold innovative streak have led Laurent to create ‘Grands Vins Blancs’ here in the Languedoc. Characterised by their aromatic style with a breeze of freshness, each contains the signature qualities of the domaine: elegance, balance and minerality.
Hot, dry summers followed by cool, damp winters provide ideal conditions for producing wines of this character, along with the proximity of the river Orb to the Cazal Viel estate, which cools the vineyards in the heat of summer. Meanwhile, sitting on a rocky plateau at 350m high, les Auzines is cooler than most of the Languedoc region, making it the ideal place to grow aromatic grapes of high quality.
With a blend of tradition and innovation, the two estates are developed with respect for nature and the terroir, minimum interference and constant improvements to production methods. Having specialised for many years in growing Viognier, Laurent Miquel was the first to bring Albariño back to France, where it is growing happily in the heights of Les Auzines!
Today, Laurent Miquel has a range of original and characterful ‘Grands Vins Blancs’ to offer, along with rosés and reds made with the same principles of freshness and elegance in mind, and it is with the same passion that wines have been created here by the Miquel family for the past 225 years!
